Who is God? – It will perhaps come as a surprise to many, that the goal of both science and spirituality is to reveal the answer to this very question! For to ask the question “Who is God” is to seek the answers to our very origins: “How did the Universe come into existence? How did life originate? What makes us conscious?” The aim being to discover the one unifying force from which everything that we see – be it plants or animals, planets or galaxies – in fact our entire Universe, has manifested.

This story shows that even one moment of sincere self-reflection and introspection can completely change the direction of our life and save us from committing many sins in the future. Such a change when effected with a sincere feeling of regret and a firm resolution to not repeat the mistakes of the past, is so powerful that it can free us from the effects of many bad Karmas accumulated over previous births. Just as a single stone cast is sufficient to disperse hundreds of assembled crows, similarly one moment of sincere self reflection and surrender to God is enough to wipe out numerous bad karmas. Therefore instead of criticizing others, and always finding faults with them, we must turn our gaze inwards and introspect to find what are the bad habits within our own nature that need to be changed. We are all familiar with the saying – “Empty handed we are born into this world, and empty handed we shall return.” The process of life and death is such that we cannot take even a grain of sand out of this world, when we depart. However, while we cannot take our cherished possessions with us, nevertheless there is 1 highly critical, yet deeply overlooked “thing”, which we do take with us when we die!

Disciple: Mother, why is it that the mind does not become steady? When I try to think of God, I find the mind drawn towards other objects. Mother: It is wrong if the mind is drawn towards secular objects. By ‘secular objects’ is meant money, family, etc. But it is natural to think of the work in which one is engaged. If meditation is not possible, do Japa. Realization will come through Japa. If the meditative mood comes, well and good, but by no means do it by force.

What is time? The interval between two states is called time. A state cannot come into being unless the mind calls it into existence. The mind must be held by the Self (soul). If the mind is not made use of there is no concept of time. Time and space are in the mind but one’s true state lies beyond the mind. The question of time does not arise at all to the one established in one’s true nature.” – Sri Ramana Maharshi

Vivekananda, one of India’s greatest spiritual teachers. The story, which appears in the book “God Lived With Them – The Life Stories of Sixteen Disciples of Sri Ramakrishna” (World, India) by Swami Chetanananda, goes as follows:

Swami Vivekananda, one of India’s greatest teachers of Vedanta Philosophy, left his physical body on July 4th, 1902. He was just 39 years of age. Many people have wondered – what caused an evolved soul like Swami Vivekananda to die at such a young age? Aren’t yogi’s able to extend their own life-span and live for very long periods of time? Actually, behind the passing of every realized soul such as Swami Vivekananda, there is an immense spiritual reality hidden, which we ordinarily do not grasp. Luckily for us, Swamiji (as he was called), himself revealed the truth in great detail. His amazing answer in the video below!

One day a young, well-educated man came to Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi, prostrated and sat down. Addressing Bhagavan he said, “Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was able to elevate Vivekananda to the state of Nirvikalpa Samadhi with just a touch. Can Bhagavan do the same for me?”

Disciple: We have various guesses about your previous lives. The other day I happened to ask X whether you were Shakespeare. He was diffident. My own belief is that you have somehow amalgamated all that was precious in those that manifested as Homer, Shakespeare, Valmiki, Dante, Virgil and Milton: if not all, at least the biggest of the lot. Kindly let us know the truth. Among your other and non-poetic incarnations, some surmise Alexander and Julius Caesar.
