If you were in Australia or New Zealand in the 70s you’d know the popular Skyhooks’ song “Ego is not a dirty word” which celebrated the positive aspects of having a healthy ego, including a sense of self-worth and self-respect.

Yet for many people we work with, their ego is something that they’re troubled by so they try to get rid of it, seeing it as something that’s holding you back.

So which is it…is your ego your friend or your foe on your journey to live as your Light?

If you look at many of the spiritually focused articles about the ego, you find it’s portrayed as a problem to be dealt with, as an impediment to your enlightenment. It’s the cause of your pride, your sense of superiority to others and it keeps you trapped in the physical.

Yikes…if that’s the case, I’m in real trouble because I love my ego!

I think it’s fabulous because it’s me! Does it make me feel better than anyone else? Not at all! Does it help me appreciate who I am already and all that I’m still to become? Definitely!

You see, in my interpretation of the word and concept, my ego is my sense of me as physical Mary in this current life. It’s my personality, my sense of humour, my likes and dislikes none of which are fixed because they keep changing as I do.

Now that may be a problem if that was all I thought I was…but I don’t.

When I look in the mirror and see myself, I see the physical self and I also see and feel my Energetic Self…my Soul or my Essence. I’m not one or the other, I’m both and it’s the collaboration between them that makes me who I am in each moment.

My ego isn’t an “inflated feeling of pride” as an online dictionary would have me believe, rather it is my sense of self-love, self-worth and self-esteem.

Looking at the online dictionary definitions of ego and the example sentences listed, they are all focused on the ego being fragile and needing to be boosted, or it’s evil twin, the over-inflated ego, which gives rise to a sense of superiority and criticism of others.

The ego is the physical me and it’s a neutral term.

When I’m caught up in doubt, or if I’m judging myself or others then my ego is just the physical me who’s momentarily forgotten who I truly am! If I judge it and identify with it, then I keep myself stuck in that sense of self or that feeling.

When judgement pops up, it’s a prefect time for The Circle of Three  Awareness, Acceptance and Compassion.

Here’s how I use this simple yet powerful frequency process …

I begin by becoming Aware that I’m feeling less than the best and brightest me. It’s not who I am, it’s just how I’m feeling or reacting in that moment. With that awareness, I then Accept the feelings or my reaction as just what is in that moment.

I don’t criticise myself or give my power away to the mythical ego for making me feel that way as it tries to drag me back into the “lower world” of the evil physical!

Instead, I take a couple of deep breaths and envelop myself in Compassion giving myself a virtual hug of self-love as I gently remind myself of the larger, brighter more loving Self that I’ve temporarily lost sight of.

I remind myself that the physical me with all of my emotions and doubts is ok. I remember that I don’t have to be perfect because I’m still in the process of learning to live as the extraordinary, fully aware and connected me all the time.

I think it’s time to liberate the ego from all this bad press and return it to its original Latin meaning of I or self.

Once you’ve done that, you can take the next step to expand the meaning it to include the exciting collaboration between the physical self and the energetic self because you’re both.

When you do, you’ll realize that your ego is always evolving and becoming a richer and wiser and clearer embodiment of your Essence because you determine it and you have mastery over it. That’s the journey of en-lightenment that we’re all on … ego and all!

Lots of love
